For example, you can detect that your defective upper heating element if there is a constant supply of lukewarm water during a shower whereas you can indentifies a defective lower heating element when there a short supply of fully hot water.
Replacing heating elements is a relatively easy project. But make sure that choose the replacement part as the ones currently in the water heater means the new heating elements must be of the same style and voltage/wattage rating.
Removing the heating element:
- • By turning off the circuit breaker or fuse powering the heater, turn off power to the electric water heater at the main power panel.
- • Next step is to drain the water heater.
- • Fold the insulation outward and away from the heater element, by removing the access cover panel and insulation which covers the heating element terminal block.
- • Make sure that attachment point from the thermostat is disengaged.
- • Remove the wires by loosening the screws holding the wires to each of the two terminal screws.
- • If the heating element is screw-in type then by turning the element counter clockwise with a socket wrench and 1 1/2 inch socket, remove a screw-in type heating element. Now remove the existing gasket.
- • Now if the heating element is Flange –type then by removing the four screws holding the element in place, remove a flange-type heating element.
Installing a New Heating Element
- • If you are replacing the bottom heating element, it is good practice to remove and sediment at the bottom of the tank. So, where the gasket fastens to the tank, clean the area surrounding.
- • Before buying the Replacement of Electric Water Heater Elements make sure spare part has the correct voltage and wattage rating. On the flange or terminal block of the element or on the water heater’s data plate, you can find this information.
- • Insert the assembly into the water heater tank after positioning the new gasket on the heating element. With a socket wrench until secure, tighten a screw-in type heating element by turning clockwise.
- • On the water heater, close the drain valve.
- • To allow the tank to fill completely with water, open the nearest hot water faucet.
- • After obtaining a constant flow of water, keep the hot water faucet open for 3 minutes. This will purge the lines of any excess air and sediment.
- • Around the heating element, check for leaks.
- • Make sure power wires are tight which are connected to the electric heating element.
- • Reinstall the thermostat cover.
- • Re-install the access cover panel.
- • By turning on the circuit breaker powering the water heater, turn power to the water heater back on at the main power panel.
